A Cartoon Conundrum: Daily China Cartoon

I love the really powerful visuals and creative thought that goes into each of the Leng Mu cartoons we showcase here on the Dreamblogue, but sometimes I have difficulty understanding what exactly Mr. Leng is trying to tell us with his images.  I’ve posted two of his cartoons here.  I’d like to tell you about my reaction to each cartoon, and invite you to share your own ideas about the cartoons’ meaning.

First,  we have this cartoon:

For me, this cartoon is about connection.  Though we may to separate ourselves from our surrounding and from other people, we maintain a tie to our communities.

Second we have this cartoon:

For this second photo, I remember too clearly a story from a trip I took to Yangshuo.  At the top of one of the gorgerous，terraced hills there, there was a place to take photos, buy drinks, and relax as you continued to the next part of your journey.  While we were there, taking photos of the fantastic countryside, there was a heated argument happening between a woman and man who looked to be her tour guide.  My friends and I continued to take pictures and ignore the argument, which was becoming more heated.  Eventually, the woman became so upset she began screaming and was on her knees, howling at the man and to anyone who would listen.  Unable to resist the temptation, many people began taking photos of the woman’s clear pain and grief in an uncomfortable voyeuristic way.  So when I see this picture, I remember how it is easy to take curious and undue interest in someone else’s grief, pain, and suffering.

But what I like to think about, in a more positive way, is that it is possible to transcend these feelings of anger, fear, and suffering.  In this cartoon, the people are smiling, despite their destroyed vehicle, and they see this roadblock as part of their trip that they will remember with fondness later.  They have transformed their own troubles into something they can laugh at, and that is truly a great thing and a part of the spirit of the Dreamblogue: transforming reality to make dreams come true and to enjoy life.

Travel update: Dawei has returned from Yangshuo with a few exciting stories.  Look for the stories of his adventures in the next few days.

我喜爱漫画家冷牧先生每一幅漫画作品中强大的视觉和创造性思维，正如我们在此展示的一样。但有时也难以读懂冷牧先生作品中的深刻概念。我在这里张贴了他的两幅作品。我想和大家一起分享彼此对漫画的想法。

对于我来说，第一幅漫画是关于联系的。虽然我们可以独立于自己的环境或身边的人，但是我们生活于同一社区，紧紧相连。

对于第二张图片，我想起我阳朔之行中的一个故事，记忆犹新。在那里一座高高的风景优美的梯田山上，有提供拍照，饮料的地方。也可以在那里休息一会以继续下一部分的旅途。当我们停驻在那里拍摄魅力的乡景时，看到一女人正和她的男导游激烈地争吵。我们继续拍照，没去理会这愈激烈的争吵。最终，该女人愤怒地尖叫，对那男人大声哄叫，在场的人都听得见。无法抗拒的这一情景，许多人幸灾乐祸地开始拍摄该女子的痛苦和忧伤。所以当我看到这张图片，我记得人们很容易好奇地注意别人的悲伤和痛苦。

但在积极的一方面，我认为是能够超越这些愤怒，恐惧，痛苦情绪的。在这幅漫画，人们微笑，尽管他们的车已坏，他们将这个路障作为旅程的一部分并铭记这精彩一刻。他们把自己的麻烦一笑置之，这正是载梦博客的精神所在：转化现实，实现梦想，并让生活变得更美好。

He frequently receives invitations to a number of countries for seminars about cartoons, and his works have been collected by galleries in more than 70 countries, including Canada, Italy, Switzerland, the United States, Turkey, Greece, France, and South Korea. In China, his works have been exhibited in the Nanjing Art Gallery, the Tiantai Art Gallery, the Guangzhou Art Gallery, the Guangzhou Flower Exhibition Center,and the Wuhan International Exhibiting Center, among others.

冷牧，1966年11月8日出生在江苏王沃。中国美术家协会会员。1988年毕业于江苏戏剧专科学校舞台美术设计专业。迄今，在国内外报纸、杂志、书籍、电视等媒体发表漫画、插画和设计等作品8000余件。300余幅漫画作品在60多个国家分别举办的国际漫画比赛及国内大型展览中入展和获奖。擅长漫画、中国画、书法。现定居南京。

近年艺术成就有：
2001年获美国APCA国际漫画比赛唯一银牌；
2001年获韩国大田国际漫画比赛特别奖；
2002年获希腊国际漫画比赛唯一银牌；
2002年获阿根廷国际漫画比赛唯一第2名；
2003年获塞浦路斯国际漫画比赛唯一第3名；
2003年获韩国大田国际漫画比赛特别奖；
2004年获印度国际漫画比赛特别荣誉提名奖；
2004年入选中国第十届全国美展；
2005年获韩国汉城国际漫画比赛唯一第2名；
2005年获伊朗国际漫画比赛唯一评委会奖；
2006年获韩国大田国际漫画比赛最佳漫画家奖；
2006年应邀赴土尔其担任第23届艾丁道昂国际漫画比赛评审委员。
2007年获韩国大田国际漫画比赛最佳漫画家奖；
2007年获联合国驻科索沃特派团参与组织的国际漫画比赛唯一最高奖–大奖，奖金10000欧元。
多次应邀出国领奖和参加国际漫画研讨会，一切旅费均由主办国全额承担。数百件作品被江苏美术馆及加拿大、意大利、瑞士、美国、土耳其、希腊、法国、韩国、芬兰等等70多个国外博物馆、艺术馆、漫画馆、画廊及个人藏家收藏。

建立“冷牧漫画馆”，收藏130多个国家著名漫画家30000余件作品原稿，曾在南京美术馆、天台博物馆、广州文化展览中心、广州花城会展中心、武汉国际会展中心等地举办国际动漫原作展览，累计观众达30万人。编著的《世界漫画名作》等系列书籍由陕西师范大学出版社出版，国际公开发行。
