The 64 Chinese students and 11 teachers in town from Shanghai, China, split up in groups Thursday to perform various forms of community service to local organizations.

The Chinese students are in Mansfield for 12 days taking English classes at Mansfield Senior High School and learning about American culture.

A mutually beneficial relationship

While many foreign universities have set up joint programmes or campuses in China, even more are recruiting Chinese students to their home campuses.

In 2008, a total of 98,510 Chinese students arrived in colleges and universities in the US alone to begin undergraduate or postgraduate studies.

Students from overseas can be a valuable source of revenue, since they typically pay higher fees.

For example, the University of Nottingham in the UK charges home students £3,290 a year to study agriculture, while international students pay £14,260.

Growth in recruitment has been rapid. Shibin Li, the managing director of the Beijing office of Michigan State University, says that in 2003 it enrolled about 30 Chinese students to study in the US. Last year the university recruited 500. Numbers have increased, he says, “because Chinese guys are rich”.

“The Chinese families now have money, and to get a visa is more easy,” he says.

The US authorities are thought to be keen to let Chinese students in, since China’s rapid improvement in living standards means most will return home.

“It’s a gold mine,” Mr Li adds. “The tuition every year is $42,000. So that’s 500 multiplied by $42,000.”

However, he says the university will restrict numbers to ensure a balance of nationalities among foreign students.

Universities also insist they take only highly qualified Chinese students.

“We are more focused on the academic quality of the students rather than the number we admit,” says Wanling Qu of the Beijing office of the University of Minnesota, an institution that last year recruited 254 Chinese students, bringing the total in the university to 1,400.

And they could do well once they returned home.Sonia Sren, a recruitment assistant at Kansas State University’s office in Beijing, says a Chinese person with a degree from the US may enjoy improved employment prospects.

Best B-Schools in America

We will be listing the top five schools in each country in no particular order. The criteria used to evaluate schools differs greatly from that used by US News and World Report and others. We queried parents and prospective students during our travels about those issues that most concerned them and most affected their choices before and after admission. The rankings displayed are unbiased and were not affected by our affinity for any program despite one of the schools being a strong supporter of the Blog of Dreams.

Criteria:

  • Openness Toward Foreign Students/Ethnic Diversity
  • Financial Assistance
  • Post Graduation Placement Assistance
  • Faculty to Student Ratio
  • Overall Reputation of Graduate School
  • Campus Safety
  • Ease of Application/Admission Office Attitude
  • Affordability: Living Costs, Tuition
  • Curriculum
  • Student Life
  • Internship Options
  • Salary After Graduation
  • Alumni Network

Study Abroad in the US: Jacky Blogs his Dream

(This article is in English. To read it in Chinese, click on the more tag.)

A major goal of the China Dreamblogue is to create educational opportunities for students who may not otherwise have the chance, and as a part of this, we are creating possibilities for students to study abroad at US and UK Schools as well as other places. As a part of our journey, we will be giving away approximately $24,000 USD (¥186,000) in scholarships from America to qualified applicants looking to make their educational dreams come true.

Living in a foreign country is difficult, and often students need guides. Here, you will find guides written in Chinese about preparing for study abroad, learning about the US and UK foreign culture, and preparing for the strange and interesting experience of studying abroad and living in a foreign country.

Jacky, one of the loyal dreamers of this blog, has made a decision to prepare for studying abroad in the US in hopes of earning an MBA from Calpoly’s MBA program. I’ve asked him a few questions about his dreams with us and why he has chosen to study abroad.

Jacky Blogs his Dream to Study Abroad in the US

David: Why do you dream about studying abroad?

Jacky: I want better education opportunities, and I think universities in UK and USA can give me this.

David: Why do you want a MBA?

Jacky: My father has a factory that is neither big nor small. And my dream is to help him to develop it into a big, international company. I hope that I will learn how to do that from the MBA program.

David: What is your dream for your family?

Jacky: I hope my father and my mother has a good and relaxing life after I come back from abroad. I hope that what I do will support all the spending in my family’s daily life. What’s more, I really just want them have a happy life.

David: What about your community?

Jacky: I’m from Foshan, a city near Guangzhou. I think my city now is a wealthy city and full of opportunities. People living in this city are happy. Foshan City is now the third biggest city in Canton province, behind Guangzhou and Shenzhen. I think it will become more and more popular all over the world in the future. This is a good chance for me.

David: If you wanted to give advice to other people about following their dreams, what would you say?

Jacky: In my opinion, study abroad requires a brave heart. You have to adapt to life in a whole different environment, culture and people. You have to study in a totally different educational system. You have to deal with your homesickness. You have to overcome disconnection from your friends and family.

David: How do you feel about living in foreign country?

Jacky: I think living in a foreign country is exciting at the beginning and is terrible after the first few weeks. When you first arrive, I think you will feel like you are traveling. But when you keep doing the same thing week after week, and there is no one you can talk to, that’s the most dangerous and terrible time for a international student. But during this time you explore your surroundings, and when you get used to it, it will become your second hometown, and you will feel you don’t want to leave.

Continuing Education for Expats

One thing I do miss about America is the grand amount of community and continuing education available to virtually anyone and much of it for free. I was stumbling through Illustratrator’s newest release on MAC yesterday and bemoaning the fact that even a book on the subject would be hard to come by or too expensive to ship or pick up in Hong Kong.

Coincidentally, two colleges contacted me about the possibility of low-residency Masters and Doctoral programs and Continuing Education. One school is based in the UK and one is in the US. Both have good reputations and a comprehensive offering of courses. Both asked me if I thought they could be successful in China with the expat community. I answered honestly that I hadn’t a clue, but that I would ask you.

Let me know your thoughts and please feel free to add a response or two to the poll.

Link It Forward

china.jpg

This link is now on the front page….Leave your comments there please!

One of the goals of the China Dreamblogue is to create a strong, pro-China internet presence on the Internet. To do this, we need your help. And as we create our China friendly network, we would also like to help the people who help us get to the top of the rankigs. The process is simple and powerful.

We’ve created an idea called Link it Forward, similar to internet memes. “Link it Forward” will travel rapidly through pro-China blogs. In addition, this idea will help to create links–potentially thousands–to your website.

There are six simple steps:

  1. Take the two lists of blogs below these instructions and put them in a post on your blog. The first list of three blogs, Onemanbandwidth, The China Dreamblogue, and Sinotrading, should always remain on the list.
  2. On the second list, put a link to your blog at number 1.
  3. Move each of the other links down one step on the list. The first blog becomes second, the second becomes third, etc.
  4. This means the number 5 link has successfully completed its cycle.
  5. Send your updated list to at least five other people and as many as you want. The more people you send to, the more links you will get. If you have a hundred people you want to send this to, go ahead!
  6. If you want, create a new list of five blogs you think deserve some links. Be kind and include the permanent list as well.

Remember, please don’t change the permanent links or add a number six link. Also, all of the advertising money generated from the permanent links goes to charity. You are free to do as you will with the money you earn from Link It Forward. We will list some places you can go to monetize your site.

Permanent List:

Onemanbandwidth

The China Dreamblogue

Sinotrading

The Moveable list:

Your blog

four of your friends’ blogs

The numbers work out well for you. You will have approximately five rounds on the list.

On the first round, you’ll get five links.

On the second, you’ll get 25 (each of the five people you sent the list to will get five more people to put your link on their site).

The third round nets you 125, the fourth 625, and the fifth 3,125.

Your grand total (should everyone follow Link it Forward) will be 3,905 links. And if you get linked to again by another blog, you can start the process all over again to earn another 3,000 links. With a few thousand links, you can begin to generate money from your site via Google Adwords. Go to Google Adwords button at the bottom of this site now to begin to monetize your site.

This is for fun. This is to promote positive value for pro-China blogs in Western search engines, to raise money for China charities and needy people on the three permanent blogs (they donate their ad monies to charity) and to make China blogs more popular all over the Internet.

Let’s link it forward!

To monetize your site click on the links provided on the front page of Blog of Dreams

China Dreamblogue

Onemanbandwidth

The China Dreamblogue

Sinotrading

让我们一起link it forward(链接在一起)吧!

About

The China Dreamblogue is a project undertaken by two American teachers to provide educational opportunities for people in China. We are doing this because we want to help people to achieve the dreams that they haven’t been able to. Hence our name is The China Dreamblogue.

Travel China Blog for Charity and Understanding

Our project has 4 major parts:

  1. Traveling: First, Yanzhi Liu and I will be traveling to the 22 provinces of mainland China over the course of the next 12-16 months. We will visit and interview at least one person from every ethnic group and from every province to find out about their lifestyle, their beliefs, and their hopes and ambitions for themselves and others. We will post these interviews on the Dreamblogue for you to read.
  2. Free Scholarships: Yanzhi and I are giving away scholarships that will allow students to study abroad in the UK and the US.
  3. China information: Yanzhi and I will be posting regular information about China on this blog. Yanzhi and I have found that Westerners’ understanding of China is often darkened by news reports that focus on the negative parts of China. We will be putting up information here on the blog that seeks to find the interesting, curious, good parts of Chinese culture and highlight them here.
  4. Money for Charity: Yanzhi and I are raising money for two charities, Thomas Stader’s Library Project and Terry Dougherty’s Reading Tub. We will be raising money by selling advertising on the Blog of Dreams and giving away the advertising money to Thomas and Terry directly through a Feedburner account. Yanzhi and I will never touch the money.
Terry.

How you can help (and don’t worry, none of these cost you a dime):

  1. Blog your dreams. It’s simple. Go the form the the bottom of this page (and at the end of most posts, and fill out your dream. You can send your dream as a photo, video, text, or any other medium you can imagine. It can be a big dream or a small one. We are currently looking for sponsors who will be able to help fund your dream.
  2. Visit the site often. The more people visit, the more hits and pageviews the site gets, and the more money we can charge advertisers. More money will go to charity. We’ll be sure to have fresh content for you to come back to every day.
  3. Send us your photos. Over the course of the Dreamblogue journey, we’ll be sponsoring a photo contest for both professionals and amateurs, with prizes for the photos who get the most votes.
  4. Favorite us on Technorati. There is a little green button you can click on that says, “fave this blog technorati.” We are trying to generate publicity for our project by becoming the most favorited blog in the world on Technorati. Click on the button, register as a member (don’t worry, it’s free and spam-free), and click on the button one more time on our site to move us one step closer to our goal.

点击那个写着“fabe this blog technorati.”

Link it Forward: Creating a Network for China

One of the many goals of the China Dreamblogue is to create a strong, pro-China internet presence in the blogosphere. To do this, we need your help. And as we create our pro-China network, we would also like to help the people who want to be part of this network by giving them a way to increase their SEO power and their ability to monetize their site. Sound complicated and difficult? The process is deceptively simple and powerful.

We’ve created an idea called link it forward. Similar to the internet memes and the Thinking Blog tag that recently moved through a number of English-language blogs about China, our idea will travel rapidly through pro-China blogs. In addition, this idea will help to create links–as many as four thousand–to your site through a trickle-down method.

There are five simple steps:

  1. Take this list of 8 blogs and put them in a post on your blog. The first three blogs, Onemanbandwidth, The China Dreamblogue, and Sinotrading, remain on the list.
  2. At the top of the moveable list, put a link to your blog.
  3. Remove the link from the bottom of blog.
  4. Send your updated list to at least five other people.
  5. If you want, create a new moveable list of five blogs you think deserve some links. Be kind and include the permanent list as well.

Perma-List:

The Moveable list:

The numbers work out well for you. You will have approximately five rounds on the list. On the first round, you’ll get five links.
